Do You Need llms.txt to Appear in ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Search?
A new text file cannot stand in for a useful, accessible website. Start by separating search discovery from model training, then check each provider’s documented controls and the actual public page.

Begin with the documented requirement
A business considering an AI-visibility service should ask what a proposed llms.txt file is expected to do. The file may be offered as a curated machine-readable guide to the site. That is different from evidence that a particular search product uses it to rank or recommend the business.
Google’s AI optimization guide states that Google Search ignores llms.txt for visibility and rankings. It also says that no special AI markup is needed. That statement concerns Google Search; it should not be generalized into a claim about every other system.
For ChatGPT and Claude, start with the providers’ documented search-crawler controls. Their documentation identifies specific bots and purposes. It does not establish that adding llms.txt guarantees inclusion or recommendation. Ask a supplier to distinguish a documented access requirement from an experiment.
Separate search crawling, training and user requests
| Provider | Agent | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | OAI-SearchBot | Discovery for ChatGPT search results. |
| OpenAI | GPTBot | Crawling content that may be used for model training. |
| OpenAI | ChatGPT-User | Certain user-initiated page visits; not automatic search crawling. |
| Anthropic | Claude-SearchBot | Crawling to improve search result quality. |
| Anthropic | ClaudeBot | Collection that may contribute to model training. |
| Anthropic | Claude-User | Retrieval in response to user requests. |
OpenAI’s crawler documentation says search and training settings are independent. It also notes that robots.txt rules may not apply to user-initiated ChatGPT-User actions. Do not assume a rule for one agent has the same meaning for another.
Anthropic’s crawler guidance explains its three agents and the effects of blocking them. A restriction on its search bot can reduce search visibility, while its training bot serves a different purpose. Make those choices deliberately rather than copying a blanket ‘block AI’ rule.
Write the access policy before editing robots.txt
Decide which public pages the business wants search services to retrieve and what training preference it wants to express. Document those separately. Then have the developer review the existing robots file and hosting rules, including any path restrictions that must remain in place.
The following is an illustrative policy fragment for allowing the listed search crawlers while opting out of the listed training crawlers. Review it alongside the complete site policy and add the path restrictions appropriate to your application before using the example.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
Disallow: /api/
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /
Disallow: /api/
User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /Crawler rules are not authentication. Customer records, proposals and portal content need appropriate access controls even when crawling is disallowed. Our Google search-content controls guide explains the separate indexing and presentation decisions for that search product.
Verify the page and the hosting boundary
A permissive robots file is not enough if a firewall replaces the article with a challenge, the route returns an error or the service description requires a login. Inspect the production response and the actual content delivered. Use the provider’s documented verification information when evaluating crawler requests; a familiar user-agent string alone is not proof of identity.
- Check the homepage and representative service and article URLs.
- Confirm that public information can be retrieved without an account.
- Review robots rules alongside CDN and security settings.
- Check that navigation and contextual links reach the important pages.
- Keep private records protected independently of crawler preferences.
If you maintain llms.txt for a specific integration that uses it, keep it accurate and identify that integration’s purpose. Do not let an optional file become a second, conflicting description of the company. The public service page remains the place a prospective customer must be able to evaluate.
Spend the next effort on the demonstrated gap
If a documented search crawler is blocked unintentionally, investigate that access issue. If the page is accessible but says little about the service, improve the explanation and supporting evidence. If visits arrive but inquiries fail, repair the customer journey. These observations justify different work.
Google’s AI-features guidance says supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet, while inclusion is not guaranteed. Access creates an opportunity to be considered; it does not establish that any provider will select the page for a given answer.
Keep dated observations of cited pages and identifiable referrals, then assess real inquiries separately. Our ChatGPT and Claude referral guide provides a reporting template. Avoid treating one favourable prompt response as a durable ranking.
If you want a clearer discovery foundation, share your website and its current limitations with Menerai. Our website design and development service can address service clarity, public access and the inquiry path as a concrete project, with claims tied to what can actually be verified.
