How Can Your Website Appear in ChatGPT and AI Search?

Begin with a website that can be accessed and understood. AI search adds new discovery surfaces, but it does not turn technical settings into a guarantee that your business will be recommended.

Different search experiences have different controls

ChatGPT search and Google’s AI features are distinct systems. A website owner should understand the relevant access controls rather than treat ‘AI visibility’ as one switch. Eligibility, retrieval and appearing in a particular answer are different things.

OpenAI’s crawler documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search discovery, from GPTBot, used for potential model training. Those controls are independent. Allowing search access does not require allowing training access.

Google’s AI features guidance says normal SEO best practices remain relevant and that there is no special AI schema or additional technical requirement for its AI search features. This supports treating search foundations as part of a well-built website.

Check access before changing the copy

Review robots.txt, public page access and your hosting or firewall rules. A page that works in your own browser may still be challenged or blocked for a crawler. If you want ChatGPT search to access your public content, check that OAI-SearchBot is not blocked by those layers.

robots.txt
# Example only: allow search access
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

This is an illustration of a search-specific rule, not a complete robots.txt file. Do not paste it over existing policies without reviewing them. Keep private routes protected through authentication; robots.txt is a crawler instruction, not access control.

Write content that stands on its own

Explain your service, the customer it is for, your actual service area and the scope of the work. A clear answer should make sense without needing someone to inspect a complex animation or infer the message from an image.

Practical FAQs and articles can help a reader understand costs, process and tradeoffs. They should answer questions your team can discuss directly. Adding a large volume of repetitive text does not make the site more useful.

Keep business identity consistent across the site and credible external profiles. Use accurate structured data where it describes the visible content. Treat it as a way to explain the page, rather than a promise of citation or a replacement for evidence.

Make claims easy to evaluate

A portfolio entry should say what was designed or developed. A performance claim should have data behind it. A service-area page should explain where you serve customers without inventing a local office.

These choices help people assess the business regardless of how they found it. See our selected work and website service for the kind of scope descriptions we use. The aim is clear information, not copy written only for a machine.

Measure visits and inquiries, not just mentions

OpenAI’s publisher FAQ describes tracking ChatGPT referrals through analytics. Look at what those visits do next: the pages viewed, the services considered and whether they lead to useful inquiries.

A single prompt test can give you a snapshot, but answers may vary with wording, context and time. Keep dated observations if you are studying visibility and avoid treating one answer as a stable ranking report.

  • Check crawler access and actual public page responses.
  • Keep core service information clear and consistent.
  • Publish a few useful resources instead of repeated city or keyword variants.
  • Use only supported claims and appropriate structured data.
  • Track referral traffic and successfully delivered inquiries.

Keep the website useful first

For a business looking for a new website, design quality, service clarity and a reliable contact path still matter. Search foundations should support those goals. They should not make the site read like a technical configuration guide.

We include performance and search foundations in website design and development, with AI discovery treated as one part of the wider picture. Tell us about your site if you want to review its content and implementation together.
