Google Clarifies AI Search Controls: What Business Website Owners Should Check

Search discovery, snippets and private access are separate decisions. Google’s updated documentation is a reason to review those settings carefully before changing a whole website’s visibility.

The October 21 change is a documentation refresh

Google’s October 21 documentation changelog says it refreshed the page on controlling what is shared with Google Search. The update brings together existing options, including robots meta tags, data-nosnippet, X-Robots-Tag and the Search generative AI control. It does not announce that all of those controls launched on that date.

For a business owner, the practical question is which content should support discovery and which content should remain restricted. A service description and an individualized customer proposal may sit on the same domain while needing very different treatment.

Choose the control that matches the intended outcome

Google’s content-control guide distinguishes preventing indexing, controlling presentation and protecting private content. These settings should be reviewed as separate requirements in a website or application brief.

Different intentions need different controls
IntentionApproach to review
Keep a public page out of Google SearchUse a supported noindex directive and allow Google to retrieve it.
Limit how text is presented in resultsReview the applicable snippet directives and data-nosnippet.
Manage site inclusion in Google’s generative AI featuresReview the Search generative AI control in Search Console.
Restrict a proposal to an authorized customerRequire authentication and authorization in the application.

A robots.txt disallow rule controls crawling; it is not a password and does not prove that a URL is absent from every search result. Likewise, a public page with noindex remains accessible to someone with its link. Use access controls for information that needs to be private.

Classify pages by what they are for

Take a hypothetical renovation company with service pages, a public project gallery, shared estimate links and a client portal. The service pages help prospects evaluate the company. Estimates contain customer-specific information. Treating all four groups as one search setting is an avoidable design mistake.

  • Public discovery: service descriptions, approved project stories and useful articles.
  • Public utility: a page that people can visit directly but that does not need search exposure.
  • Private work: customer records, proposals and documents restricted to authorized people.
  • Retired content: pages with an explicit redirect or removal decision.

Record an owner for each group. Marketing can identify what should help discovery, while the application team implements privacy and access requirements. The launch checklist should make those decisions visible instead of relying on a single global switch.

Inspect production rather than assuming the defaults

Ask the developer to inspect both page markup and response headers on representative production URLs. A CMS setting may differ from the directive delivered by a reverse proxy or hosting configuration. Search Console provides another view of what Google encountered, which should be compared with the current live response.

Before changing a sitewide AI inclusion setting, identify the business goal, existing setting and affected scope. Save a dated record of the decision. A settings change should be intentional even when the interface makes it easy to apply.

This article addresses Google Search. ChatGPT and Claude have their own access mechanisms. Our AI crawler guide explains why one provider’s setting should not be treated as a universal AI control.

Verify the intended boundary after a change

Test the exact outcome you wanted. For a private proposal, verify that an unauthorized visitor cannot retrieve the content. For a public service page, verify that the page and its intended discovery settings are available. A successful private-page test and a successful indexing test establish different things.

Keep the review proportionate to the site. A straightforward marketing website may need only a few representative checks. A platform that generates shareable pages needs explicit defaults, moderation and ongoing monitoring; see our shared-page spam prevention guide.

Menerai’s website service and custom software work address different parts of this boundary. Tell us what should be public and what should be private so those requirements can be designed into the project.
