Bing’s New AI Controls: Can Your Website Stay Searchable Without Allowing AI Training?

Being found in search, informing an AI answer and contributing to model training are separate choices. Microsoft’s October 30 announcement is a reason to review your website’s settings and decide which uses fit the business.

What Microsoft announced on October 30

Microsoft’s October 30 announcement separates AI training and grounding preferences while preserving traditional Bing search eligibility.

For a business owner, the useful first question is what you want customers to be able to find. A public explanation of your services has a different purpose from a private customer proposal. Decide the intended audience and use of each before asking a developer to change a global setting.

This is an announcement about Microsoft’s systems, rather than a universal control for every AI provider. Our ChatGPT, Claude and llms.txt guide covers the separate crawler controls those services document. A website review should identify the provider and purpose of each setting.

Write down the outcome before choosing a tag

Consider a hypothetical North Vancouver contractor. It wants homeowners to discover its renovation services and understand the work it accepts. It may have a separate preference about model training. It also needs customer estimates to remain restricted to the right people. ‘Allow AI’ is too broad a requirement to capture those decisions.

An original worksheet for a website review
Business questionWhat the team needs to establish
Should prospects find this page?Whether it is public, accurate and useful as a destination.
Should its information support generated answers? The business’s grounding preference for the relevant provider.
Should it contribute to model training?A separate training preference, recorded explicitly.
Is this customer-specific information?Who is authorized to retrieve it and how access is enforced.

Give these decisions an owner. The person maintaining the CMS should not have to infer company policy from a plugin checkbox. A short record of the page group, intended audience and approved treatment makes the implementation easier to review later.

A grounding restriction can affect AI exposure

Microsoft offers Allow, Disallow and DisallowExtended for grounding: using content to inform generated answers. Its announcement explains the different coverage and warns that restrictions reduce AI visibility. None guarantees citations.

That tradeoff deserves a business decision. If your objective is to make a public service explanation available to prospective customers, ask how the proposed restriction affects that objective. If the content has another purpose, record that purpose rather than automatically applying the most permissive setting.

A setting being available is not a reason to change it. Ask the developer to show the current configuration, explain the proposed difference and identify which pages it affects. Keep decisions about training distinct from decisions about how people discover and evaluate the business.

The rollout is in 2027, so review existing settings now

Microsoft says the new preferences begin taking effect as it crawls from February 1, 2027. Sites relying on NoArchive or NoCache for training or grounding restrictions should follow its transition instructions before March 1, 2027, including the applicable temporary grounding preference in Bing Webmaster Tools.

The underlying shared training signal is described in an IETF Internet-Draft. An Internet-Draft is work in progress. Microsoft’s adoption should not be read as evidence that every search or AI service implements the same behaviour.

  • Inventory existing robots directives, page metadata and response headers.
  • Identify the CMS, plugin or hosting rule responsible for each setting.
  • Record why a restriction exists before deciding whether to replace it.
  • Assign an owner to review Microsoft’s current implementation and transition instructions.
  • Verify the production response after an approved change and retain a recovery plan.

The official announcement contains the detailed transition schedule and examples. Use those instructions when implementing the change. A general article should help you frame the decision; it should not become an unreviewed configuration copied into every website.

Check the actual page as well as its settings

Ask for a representative production URL from each affected template. Open the page as a visitor and have the developer inspect the response and relevant directives. A rule written in a settings screen is useful only if the intended public response reflects it.

For a service page, review what a prospective customer learns on arrival: the work offered, genuine service coverage, relevant examples and the next step. A policy change cannot supply information the page never explained. Menerai’s North Vancouver website service brings those content and implementation decisions into the same project scope.

If a page changes, the IndexNow FAQ explains how participating search engines can be notified. A notification does not guarantee indexing. Keep the notification, the crawler’s later response and any resulting website visit separate in your records.

Choose a reviewable next step for your business

Start with an inventory and an explicit decision, then make the smallest change that implements it. If the site has no relevant restriction to migrate, the next useful work may be a clearer service page or a better project explanation. If a restriction is intentional, document how it will continue to be maintained.

After a change, record the affected URLs, the configuration and the date. Review identifiable referral visits and useful inquiries over a comparable period. A change in traffic alone cannot establish that a specific preference caused it. Our AI-referral tracking guide provides a practical reporting framework.
