What Structured Data Does a Business Website Actually Need?

Structured data should describe the business and the page accurately. Start with the real entity, the visible content and the search feature you intend to support before installing another schema plugin.

Treat schema as a description of facts

Structured data provides machine-readable information about a page and the things it describes. Google’s introduction to structured data explains how it can help the search engine understand content and support eligible search appearances. It should correspond to information visitors can inspect.

A business website usually needs a coherent identity before it needs elaborate markup. Confirm the public name, legal name where appropriate, canonical domain and genuine contact details. If those facts conflict across templates, adding a larger JSON-LD block will not resolve the contradiction.

Keep two questions separate: is the markup an accurate description, and does it meet the requirements of a supported Google search feature? A valid schema.org type is not automatically a Google rich-result feature, and a validation pass is not proof of a ranking improvement.

Choose descriptions that fit each page

A starting map for a service business website
ContentStructured-data concept to reviewFact to establish first
Company identityOrganization or an appropriate business subtypeThe actual business and its verified public details.
A genuine local business locationApplicable LocalBusiness markupA real qualifying location, not an invented service-area office.
An editorial articleArticle or BlogPostingThe visible title, author and accurate dates.
Page hierarchyBreadcrumbListThe route and labels users can navigate.
A service explanationService where appropriateThe actual offer and provider; no automatic special search display implied.

This is a planning map, not a requirement to include every type on every page. Ask what the page actually represents. A service page describing custom software is not necessarily a downloadable software application or a product with a public checkout price.

Do not let a plugin invent the business

Review any default address, rating, price range and service-area fields populated by a theme or plugin. A company serving Vancouver and Toronto does not acquire offices in both cities because those names appear in a settings panel. Empty or inappropriate fields should prompt a content decision, not a plausible-sounding invention.

Google’s general structured-data guidelines prohibit misleading markup and require it to represent visible page content. They also explain that correct markup does not guarantee a rich result. Validate the facts as well as the syntax.

For project stories, distinguish the business’s role from the client’s work. A website agency that builds a contractor’s site should not describe itself as the contractor in its own Organization data. Similarly, copied client reviews should not become ratings for a different entity.

Review what the website actually emits

A CMS may generate one organization record while an SEO plugin adds another. Ask the developer to inspect the final HTML from representative templates and identify which system owns each description. Duplicate records are a reason to check consistency, rather than automatically a penalty or a reason to delete everything.

  • Check the homepage, a service page, a project page and an article.
  • Compare names, URLs and identifiers across shared entity records.
  • Check dates and author information against the visible article.
  • Use the appropriate validators and review any unsupported-feature assumptions.
  • Repeat relevant checks when the CMS or SEO plugin changes.

If a validator does not show a rich-result preview for a type, investigate its supported features before treating that result as an error. The task is to publish accurate information in a suitable format, not to force every business fact into a more decorative result.

Keep AI-search expectations proportionate

Google’s AI optimization guide says there is no special schema required for its generative search features. Do not interpret a schema installation as a guarantee that ChatGPT, Claude or Google will recommend the business. Those outcomes need independent evidence.

The useful project deliverable is a consistent business identity, appropriate page descriptions and a documented validation process. Pair that with clear service explanations and genuine evidence. Our AI crawler and llms.txt guide covers the separate question of access.

If your existing website mixes business details or emits unclear markup, bring a representative page to Menerai. We can include the necessary template and content work in a website development scope.
